Going for the first time

Can I just turn up?
3 of the 26 saunas here take walk-ins — they are marked Walk in in the list above. 18 want you to book, and at weekends the popular ones genuinely do fill up. For the other 5 we do not know yet — their cards say so, and we are asking.
What does one visit cost?
Where a price is published it runs from $15 to $200. The spread is real rather than a quality difference: a city sauna you drop into for an hour sits at the bottom, and a hot springs day with the bathing circuit sits at the top.
Is anywhere open early or late?
15 open at 7am or earlier, for before work. 14 are still open at 9pm. 21 open seven days. Use the Open past 9pm some day and Open before 7am some day buttons above — this is the thing the annual round-up articles never tell you, because it changes with the season.
What's the difference between a sauna and a hot spring?
A sauna is a hot room — dry heat, usually 80–100°C, twenty minutes at a time, and you are in and out inside an hour. Hot springs are outdoor mineral pools fed by groundwater, at body temperature or a little above, and people stay for half a day. Bathhouses sit in between: several heat rooms, a cold plunge and somewhere to sit, built to be spent an afternoon in. 3 of the 26 places here are hot springs; the rest are saunas and bathhouses.
Do I need to bring anything?
Swimmers and a towel, and most places hire or sell both if you arrive without. Bring a water bottle — the one thing every first-timer underestimates is how much of this is just losing fluid. 20 venues have a cold plunge or ice bath, which is the part people either love or quietly skip.

The difference between a sauna and an afternoon.

A sauna is twenty minutes. A bathhouse is an afternoon. A hot spring is a drive, a long soak and dinner on the way home. We keep them apart so your Saturday goes the way you meant it to.

No review counts and no star ratings, because we have not earned any. Every number here is counted from the listings, including the gaps — the 3 saunas that publish no hours of their own are counted separately, and their pages say where the times came from.

How this works

1

See what is open now

The board at the top reads your clock and shows what is open this minute, nearest first if you tell it where you are. Nothing on it was decided when the page was built, so it cannot be out of date by an afternoon.

2

Check the price and the door

Every listing says what one visit costs and whether you can walk in or have to book. Where we only half know something, it says that too rather than guessing.

3

Go, or tell us we are wrong

Each page says where its facts came from and when we last looked. If something has changed, the button on the listing tells us in one click and we fix it.

Run a sauna? Send us your opening hours — they are the first thing anyone looks for, and we are still missing plenty. It takes about two minutes.
